No. 6 GVSU and Northern Michigan Play to Scoreless Draw Sunday Afternoon

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The No. 6 Grand Valley State women's soccer team played Northern Michigan to a scoreless draw Sunday (Oct. 9) afternoon in Marquette in a matchup between the top two teams in the GLIAC. The Lakers overall record moves to 9-1-3, 7-0-2 in the GLIAC, while Northern Michigan goes to 8-1-4 on the season, 5-1-3 in the GLIAC.

It was a defensive battle that saw only five shots on goal between the two teams. Freshman Kacy Lauer got the lone shot on goal for the Lakers in the first half from the top left of the box to the bottom left corner of the goal that was turned away by the Northern Michigan goalkeeper. In the second half, the Lakers got their best scoring chance in the 48' minute. Taylor Reid made a great pass for Nina Ferraro at the top right of the box. Ferraro placed a shot to the bottom left corner of the goal, but the Northern Michigan keeper was in good position to make the save.

The Wildcats got a good look late in the 86' minute off a header from a cross from the right side. Kendall Robertson was in great position to make the save. Two minutes later, Robertson prevented a scoring chance for Northern Michigan when she disrupted a potential breakaway. The sophomore goalkeeper made three saves in her five shutout of the season and second of the weekend. Lauer and Ferraro each had a shot on goal for the Lakers. Defenders Cate Brown and Brooke Russell played all 90 minutes, while sophomore Ryann Fetty played 83 minutes.

The Lakers will return home next weekend for their final two home games of the regular season. Friday (Oct. 14) night is senior night as the Lakers will host Saginaw Valley State under the lights at 7:00 PM. On Sunday (Oct. 16) the Lakers will host rival Ferris State at 1:00 PM.
