No. 14 GVSU Women’s Basketball Takes on Local Rival Ferris State

The Lakers and Bulldogs are both 5-1 in the GLIAC

The Grand Valley State women's basketball team has now won seven straight as they head into this week's matchup against local rival Ferris State. The Lakers will host the Bulldogs on Thursday, Jan. 13 with tip off set for 6:00 p.m. 

After defeating Davenport on Monday, the Lakers advanced to 5-1 in the GLIAC and 12-1 on the season. The Lakers were led by senior Emily Spitzley in their 73-38 victory over the Panthers. Spitzley shot 54% from the floor and 50% from behind the arc, finishing with 20 points and six three pointers. Senior Qay Stanton and junior Haley Swing finished with 11 points apiece, followed by sophomores Rylie Bisballe and Hadley Miller who each finished with 10 points.  

The Bulldogs are coming off of a 68-59 win over Saginaw Valley on Saturday and are now 5-1 in the conference. While the Lakers and Bulldogs are both 5-1 in the GLIAC, GVSU is sitting in first with their 12-1 overall record and FSU is a close second in the conference with an 11-3 overall record. Defensively, Grand Valley is first in holding teams to just 31.7% shooting from the floor and 23% shooting from behind the arc. The Lakers are also second in blocks per game (4.2) and third in rebounds per game (40.6). Ferris is leading the conference in points per game (73.4), steals per game (10.9), and assists per game (16.4). 

In last year's back-to-back games played at home, the Lakers defeated the Bulldogs 72-57 on Saturday and 60-57 on Sunday. GVSU won in the second matchup on a three-point buzzer beater to break the 57-57 tie with under a second left in play.
