No. 9 women's soccer blanks No. 24 Findlay Saturday

GVSU off to a 2-0 start to the 2021 season

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 9 Grand Valley State Lakers earned their second straight shutout with a 2-0 win over the No. 24 Findlay Oilers Saturday (Sept. 4) afternoon at the GVSU Soccer Field. The Lakers late pullaway improves them to 2-0 on the year while Findlay falls to 1-1 for the season.

The Lakers poked and prodded throughout the first 45 minutes, outshooting Findlay 15-2 and 6-1 in shots on goal, but couldn't find the back of the net heading into halftime. Kennedy Bearden finally broke through for the Lakers in the 64' after Chantel Carranza rolled one to the top of the box, Bearden cut the defender then placed a slow roller just beyond the grasp of the Findlay keeper and into the corner netting.

Ten minutes later, it was a freshman connection to give the Lakers breathing room. Hannah Becker lofted an insert from the midfield and Stephanie Sturgeon was able to out-jump the keeper and head the ball just over her into the net to double the advantage with her first career goal. Fellow freshman Kendall Robertson played all 90 minutes in net, making a diving save on her only true test of the day and commanded the defense nicely for her first solo shutout of her career.

The Lakers will make their first road trip next weekend as they head to Warrensburg, Missouri to face Northwest Missouri State and Central Missouri. Stay tuned to @GVSUSoccer and gvsulakers.com for coverage throughout the week.
