GVSU starts their season at the Oredigger Classic

09.02.2021

The Grand Valley State volleyball team will open up their 2021 fall season in Golden, Colorado to play in the Oredigger Classic Tournament hosted by the Colorado School of Mines. Live stats. Live video.

After finishing with a 12-4 record last season, the GVSU volleyball team was picked to finish first in the GLIAC South Division this year. The Lakers are looking to get off to a successful start before heading into conference play in mid-September.

Jason Johnson will be entering his first season opener as head coach of the Grand Valley State women's volleyball program.

"Our team is ready to get on the court here in Colorado and get this journey started," Johnson said. "After three weeks of training, they are excited to be at the Oredigger Classic to start their season. We have an experienced group of players who have done a great job throughout preseason growing together and getting better on the court. I am looking forward to seeing what they can accomplish while we're out here. The schedule will give us an early test on how much we have grown as a team and what areas we still have to focus on when we get back."

The Lakers begin play on Friday, Sept. 3 at 11:30 a.m. MDT/ 1:30 p.m. EST against the University of Sioux Falls on court two. This will be the Cougars first match since the 2019 season and will be the first matchup between Grand Valley State and the University of Sioux Falls.

The second match on Friday will take place at 4:00 p.m. MDT/ 6:00 p.m EST. against Southwest Minnesota State University on court two as well. The last time the Lakers played against the Mustangs was in 2014, when Grand Valley State fell to SW Minnesota State in the NCAA Final Four (series record of 3-3).

Volleyball action resumes on Saturday (Sept. 4) at 11:30 a.m. MDT/ 1:30 p.m. EST against host Colorado School of Mines on court one. This is the first matchup between the Lakers and the Orediggers. The final game on Saturday will take place at 4:30 p.m MDT/ 6:30 p.m. EST for another first-time matchup against Colorado Mesa University on court two.
