No. 14 softball sweeps Saginaw Valley Tuesday

Lakers win game one, 4-1, in ten innings then 4-2

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 14 Grand Valley State Lakers swept the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals Tuesday (May 4) in the final regular season games of the season. GVSU won the first game in thrilling fashion, 4-1, in 10 innings before a 4-2 victory in game two. The Lakers finish the regular season at 37-7 overall and 28-4 in GLIAC play to finish as the regular season champions.

Nikoma Holmen smashed a no-doubter over the left-center fence in the bottom of the tenth inning of game one to break the tie and give the Lakers the win. With the runner automatically starting on second base, Joanna Cirrincione singled home the tying run earlier in the inning after Saginaw Valley took advantage of the automatic runner in the top of the inning.

Hannah Beatus (W, 18-2) was brilliant once again, allowing just four hits and the unearned run in ten innings of work to go a perfect 15-0 in GLIAC play this season. She struck out nine and walked just two.

The Lakers scored much earlier in game two, getting a run in the first inning on a great bases-loaded plate appearance by Hannah Hollister. After falling behind 0-2, she fouled off several tough pitches and worked out a walk to drive in a run on the ninth pitch of the at bat. Taylor Rieger lofted a two-run double to deep center in the second and Joanna Cirrincione laced a single up the middle to plate a run in the third.

Ashley Platek (W, 8-3) went the distance in the circle, allowing two runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out two.

The Lakers will be the top seed in the GLIAC Tournament, which begins at 10:00 AM next Tuesday (May 11). Visit GVSULakers.com, GLIAC.org or follow @GVSUSoftball on social media for updates on game times, opponents and coverage links.
