BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Valley State women's soccer team is Great Lakes Conference (GLIAC) Tournament champion for the 14
th straight season after a 3-0 win over the Northern Michigan Wildcats in Sunday's (May 2) championship match on the campus of Ferris State University.
The Lakers, who entered the tournament as the 4-seed, become the first non-top seeded team to ever win the GLIAC Tournament championship. With no NCAA Tournament this spring, the Lakers finish the season at 6-1-1 and will enter the 2021 fall as both defending national and conference champions.
The Lakers once again found the scoreboard quickly.
Ava Cook side stepped the back line, then the Wildcat keeper, to roll her ninth goal of the season into the net. In the 28' it was a freshman-to-freshman connection as
Mackenzie Jones played a beautiful ball to get
Taylor Reid through the defense and she finished the job for her fourth goal of the season. That 2-0 lead would carry into the half.
Cook would add another in the second half to remove all doubt, heading home an insert from
Sydney O'Donnell after a short corner combo with
Caitie Baron.
Jessica Radice made three saves in her final collegiate match and
Lauren Ross earned tournament MVP for her phenomenal play in all three matches this week to finish her career as well.
The Lakers faced more trials and tribulations than anyone in the GLIAC this season and the defending champs were put to the ultimate test. They passed with flying colors.
