SANDUSKY, Ohio – The No. 13 Grand Valley State Lakers have advanced to the GLIAC Tournament championship with an 11-1 win in five innings over the 2-seed Northwood Timberwolves Wednesday (May 12) at Sports Force Parks. The Lakers improve to 40-7 on the season.
GVSU wasted no time pouncing on the Timberwolves as
Joanna Cirrincione tripled on the first pitch of the home first. She would score on a
Lydia Goble single before
Nikoma Holmen crushed an absolute no-doubter over the deep fence in left-center for her ninth homer of the year. The three-run shot gave the Lakers a 4-0 lead after one inning.
A
Brooke Henning two-run single highlighted a seven-run second, which included RBI knocks from Goble,
Morgan Wagner and
Bailey Thatcher.
Hannah Beatus (W, 20-2) would allow one run in five innings of work in the circle to enforce the run-rule win and punch the Lakers ticket to the championship game.
The Lakers will face either Northwood, 5-seed Wayne State or 6-seed Purdue Northwest in Thursday's (May 13) championship game at 10:00 AM. One win by the Lakers will give them a third straight tournament crown while their opponent would have to win twice. Opponent updates will come on GVSULakers.com and @GVSUSoftball on Twitter as they become available.
