DETROIT, Mich. – The No. 14 Grand Valley State Lakers split with the Wayne State Warriors Saturday (April 24) afternoon on the road. The Lakers took game one, 6-3, before falling 3-2 in the second game. The Lakers and Warriors split the season series as GVSU moves to 29-7 overall and 20-4 in GLIAC play.
An unearned run gave the Warriors the lead in the first inning of game one before the Lakers broke things open with a five-run fourth inning. After
Hannah Hollister drove in a run with a fielder's choice to tie the game,
Bailey Thatcher laced a two-run double into right field. That hit, which was the first of the game for GVSU, put the Lakers in front.
Megan Koenigshof doubled home Thatcher then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Taylor Rieger to round out the inning.
Nikoma Holmen would drive in an insurance run in the sixth with a single.
Hannah Beatus (W, 13-2) pitched a complete game and allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out six to remain undefeated in GLIAC play.
A first-inning home run put the Warriors ahead in game two. Thatcher drove in a run in the second with a sacrifice fly and Holmen added an RBI double in the fifth, but the offense came up just short.
Samantha Gehrls (1-1) suffered the loss allowing three runs on six hits and three walks in six innings of work.
The Lakers are back to work Sunday (April 25) when they visit the Ashland Eagles for two games. GVSULakers.com and @GVSUSoftball will have live updates as they happen.
