No. 19 Softball splits with Wayne State Tuesday

Lakers win game one, 8-0, then fall 4-0 in game two

Allendale, Mich. -- The No. 19 Grand Valley State Lakers split their doubleheader with the Wayne State Warriors Tuesday (March 30) at the GVSU Softball Field. The Lakers took game one, 8-0, and then fell, 4-0, in game two. The Lakers are now 16-4 overall and 7-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

The Lakers jumped out to an early lead when Brooke Henning drove in a run with a single in the home first. They would add on five runs in the fourth to break things open. Bailey Thatcher laced a single up the middle to plate a pair followed by a two-run triple off the wall in right by Megan Koenigshof and an RBI single up the middle by Taylor Rieger. A two-run double by Lydia Goble in the home sixth put the mercy rule into effect to give the Lakers the win.

Hannah Beatus (W, 7-2) pitched all six innings allowing just three hits and a walk for the shutout victory. She struck out two and used just 74 pitches to earn her fourth win in as many starts in GLIAC play.

The Warriors jumped on the board in the first inning of game two then used a two-run homer in the third and back-to-back extra base hits with two outs in the fifth to earn some breathing room. Ashley Platek (L, 5-2) suffered the loss.

The Lakers are back in action Saturday (April 3) when they host the Saginaw Valley State at 1 PM.
