Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lakers drop wild one to Wayne State Tuesday

GVSU now 5-5 on the 2021 season

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Grand Valley State men's basketball team fell, 62-59, to the Wayne State Warriors Tuesday (Feb. 9) evening at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The loss drops the Lakers to 5-5 on the season while Wayne State improves to 7-3 on the season.

With the Lakers leading by one point and about to shoot free throws with two minutes left in the game, a seemingly innocuous exchange led to a technical foul called against the Lakers, giving Wayne State a pair of free throws to see-saw in front. That lead would hold until the final possession. With 35 seconds left and the Warriors beginning a possession, they utilized the entire shot clock before a heaved three from nearly midcourt caught rim and led to an offensive rebound that would essentially seal the game.

The technical foul was the third whistled on the Lakers in the game, combined with a combined four flop warnings assessed.

Jake Van Tubbergen led the Lakers with a double-double, scoring 18 points with 13 rebounds and a pair of blocks. Jordan Harris (17 points) and Deleon Brown (12 points) also scored in double-figures while Christian Negron stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, eight rebounds, two blocks and three steals. The Lakers wrap up the home portion of their 2021 schedule with a pair of games against Northern Michigan this weekend.
