ALLENDALE, Mich. – The #15 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team will welcome Ferris State to town for a pair of contests beginning Saturday (Feb. 6) at 1:00 PM. On Saturday, the Lakers will become the Sawyers in the third annual Sawyers Day game where the team will wear special jerseys commemorating the "what could have been" logo for Grand Valley State. Sunday's tip is set for 3:00 PM.
The initial WBCA Top-25 poll was released on Tuesday and the Lakers checked in at #15. GVSU was the lone GLIAC school in the poll and the Lakers were the third highest ranked team in the Midwest Region, trailing #1 Drury and #9 Cedarville. This season, the top six teams in the region will advance to the NCAA Tournament, which will be played at a pre-determined location that will be announced next week.
Last week, the Lakers went a perfect 3-0, defeating Davenport on Tuesday, 77-61, before sweeping Wayne State by scores of 66-57 and 61-49. GVSU is currently on their second four-game win streak of the season and have outscored their opponents by an average of 15.5 points per game since their lone loss of the season at Parkside on Jan. 22. Hannah Kulas is averaging 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.1 steals per contest.
Ferris State will enter the weekend with a record of 3-6 after getting swept by the GLIAC North Division leader, Michigan Tech last week. The Bulldogs began the season 1-4 before winning back-to-back games against Northern Michigan and Lake Superior State. Freshman Kadyn Blanchard leads Ferris State in scoring, averaging 21.2 points per game on 42 percent shooting from the field and 88 percent shooting from the charity stripe. The Bulldogs have been without their second leading scorer from last season, Adrienne Anderson, who averaged 15.1 points per game.
