GVSU Women Claim 77-52 Victory Over Northwood

Lakers improve to 14-4

The Grand Valley State women's basketball team dominated Northwood, 77-52, Saturday (Feb. 27) afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena in the regular season finale. The Lakers improve to14-4 on the year and will next be in action at the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals Thursday (March 4) at Purdue Northwest. The opponent and time of game will be announced after the GLIAC tournament first-round games that are set for Tuesday (March 2). 

GVSU regrouped after a tough loss on Friday to the Timberwolves and played with a different intensity level, building a 15-3 advantage midway through the first quarter and led 18-11 after the opening 10 minutes. The Lakers dominated the second quarter, outscoring Northwood 23-10 and led 41-21 after 20 minutes of play. GVSU shot 54.8 percent from the floor and outscored Northwood 26-6 in the paint during the opening half. Hannah Kulas led GVSU with 11 points as eight hit the scoring column. 

Grand Valley State continued to score at will in the third quarter and led by 29 points (57-28) with 2:57 left in the third quarter on jumper by Emily Spitzley

Kulas led five players in double figures with 15 points, followed by Rylie Bisballe (13), Ellie Droste (12), Spitzley (12) and Qay Stanton with 10. Samantha Gehrls chipped in four points and nine assists, while senior Kiri Tiemeyer tallied career-highs in points (7) and rebounds (7). Bisballe added nine rebounds as GVSU outrebounded Northwood 41-23. The Lakers dished out 21 assists on 32 made field goals and turned the ball over just 12 times. GVSU shot 53.3 percent from the floor for the game and outscored Northwood 50-14 in the paint.
