MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Grand Valley State men's basketball team posted their best offensive performance of the season in a 98-69 route of the Northwood Timberwolves Friday (Feb. 26) at Riepma Arena. Four Lakers scored in double figures in the wire-to-wire victory as GVSU scored a season-high in the penultimate game of the regular season to improve to 10-6 and clinch a bye past the play-in round of the GLIAC Tournament.
The Lakers scored the first nine points of the game and led 34-5 at the midway point of the first half. They shot a sizzling 60.3% from the field for the game and hit 11 of 21 three attempts. The Lakers had 19 assists on their 38 made baskets.Â
Isaac Gassman led the way with 24 points and four assists.
Christian Negron went 6-6 from the field for 16 points and 10 rebounds,
Jake Van Tubbergen had 17 points, eight boards and four assists, and
Jordan Harris added 13 points and four dimes.Â
"This was an incredible performance by our team at the perfect time," said head coach
Ric Wesley. "In such a difficult year, with no preseason or non-conference games, it's so rewarding to see the offense come together like this as the post-season approaches. We're going to continue to take things one day at a time, but today I'm extremely pleased with our production and efficiency."
Ten different Lakers scored and nobody played more than 31 minutes as the large lead allowed GVSU to keep legs fresh for the quick turnaround for Saturday's game. The Lakers finish the regular season at Northwood tomorrow (Feb. 27) before beginning the post-season next Friday in Indiana.
