No. 18 GVSU to host Northwood in final weekend of regular season

The Lakers have clinched a top-two seed for the GLIAC Tournament

02.25.2021

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 18 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team will host Northwood in the final games of the regular season. Friday will be an afternoon tip at 1:00 PM and Saturday's regular season finale is set for 3:00 PM.

The Lakers (13-3) are currently two games back of Michigan Tech (15-1) in the league standings, however the GLIAC is using a point system to determine a regular season champion. MTU and GVSU are tied for first in the point system, which credits teams for wins against opponents with higher win percentages. According to the GLIAC release, "if a team is at the top of the standings based on win-loss percentage and another team is at the top based on the point system, the teams will be considered co-champions."

Last weekend, GVSU dropped both games vs. Michigan Tech, who jumped from No. 19 to No. 10 in the WBCA Top-25 poll this week. The Lakers held an 11-point lead with three minutes to go in game one before MTU hit a jumper as time expired to win, 54-52. In game two, the Huskies pulled away late to secure a 54-44 win and improve their win streak to 13 games. Freshman Rylie Bisballe put together an impressive performance on Saturday, scoring 17 points, grabbing eight boards, and recording four blocked shots, while junior Hannah Kulas led the Lakers on Sunday with 17 points.

Northwood enters the final weekend with a 10-6 record after splitting with Ashland. Despite playing less games this season, the Timberwolves have matched their win total from last season and are currently in the top eight of the NCAA Regional "Under Consideration" Rankings. Sophomore Makenzie Todd is the lone Northwood player averaging in double-figures (12.3 ppg.), but five other players are averaging at least 7.0 points per game.
