Lakers Take Down The Warriors In 72-35 Victory At Home

GVSU picks up first GLIAC win of the season

The Grand Valley State women's basketball team bounced back from Thursday's loss against Saginaw Valley State with a 72-35 win over the Wayne State Warriors on Saturday, Dec. 4. The Lakers advance to 6-1 on the season and are now 1-1 in the GLIAC. 

The Lakers were firing on all cylinders in the first quarter as they put up 24 points and shot 63% from the floor and 67% from behind the arc. Their hot hand continued into the second as the Lakers put up another 23 points on the board, giving them a 47-18 advantage heading into halftime. GVSU put forth just as strong of a defensive effort as they did offensively. The Lakers held the Warriors to just nine points the first quarter and nine points in the second quarter, while WSU shot 24% from the floor in the first half. Senior Emily Spitzley led all scorers with 12 points heading into the second half. 

The Lakers extended their 29 point lead to 37 in the third quarter after outscoring the Warriors 14-6. GVSU and WSU broke even in the fourth, giving the Lakers a 72-35 victory over the Warriors. 

The Lakers shot a season-high 48% from the floor and season-high 47% from three. GVSU scored 30 of their 72 points in the paint and had 21 points coming off of the bench. All nine Lakers that saw action in today's game scored for GVSU. The Lakers were led by Emily Spitzley who finished with 14 points, six rebounds, and two steals, followed by sophomore Ellie Droste who tallied 13 points. Sophomores Rylie Bisballe and Hadley Miller each scored 12 points a piece for the Lakers and finished with five rebounds and seven rebounds respectively. 

The Lakers are back in action on Thursday, Dec. 9 at Purdue Northwest.
