Women’s Basketball Opens up GLIAC Play This Week Against Saginaw Valley State and Wayne State

Lakers will be back to their normal double-header conference schedule this year

The GVSU women's basketball team will open up GLIAC play at home this Thursday, Dec. 2 against Saginaw Valley State at 6:00 p.m. and will host Wayne State on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 1:00 p.m. The men's basketball game will follow after the women's game on Thursday and Saturday. 

The Lakers are looking to extend their undefeated 5-0 start to the season and pick up their first conference win of the year. Currently the Lakers are ranked #13 in the nation in the WBCA NCAA DII Top 25 Coaches Poll and are #2 in the Midwest Region in NCAA DII D2SIDA Region Polls. 

Grand Valley State is coming off of a sweep in the Rollins Classic Tournament in Winter Park, Fla. The Lakers went 2-0 on the weekend, defeating Rollins College 70-39 on Friday and Embry-Riddle University 67-47 on Saturday. Senior Emily Spitzley led the way on Friday and Saturday as she scored 28 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Lakers. Sophomore Ellie Droste was also a key piece for the Lakers, scoring 24 points and shooting 80% from behind the arc (4-5) last weekend. 

Saginaw Valley State enters conference play with a record of 5-2 and are coming off a 77-72 win over Truman State. The Cardinals finished conference play 9-9 last year and finished fourth in the GLIAC, while GVSU finished 14-4 and finished second. In last year's matchup between the Lakers and Cardinals, GVSU won the series hosted at SVSU. The Lakers won the first game on Friday 66-51 and the second one on Saturday 50-49. Freshman Rylie Bisballe hit the game winning free throw with seven seconds left in Saturday's game, giving Grand Valley State a 2-0 start in conference play last season. 

The Wayne State Warriors are off to a 4-1 start to the season. After winning their first four games, WSU fell to No. 6 Ashland in a 71-59 loss on Sunday. The Warriors finished the season 11-7 last year and placed fifth in the GLIAC. Last year's games were hosted by the Warriors, where the Lakers were able to leave Detroit with their third weekend sweep of the season. GVSU won the first game on Saturday 66-57 and Sunday's game 61-49.
