ALLENDALE, Mich. – Three second-half goals lifted the No. 1 Grand Valley State Lakers past Northwood, 3-0, Friday (Nov. 5) night at the GVSU Soccer Field. The Lakers improve to 16-0-1 and 12-0-1 in GLIAC play with one regular season game remaining this Sunday (Nov. 7) at Ferris State with a 1 PM kickoff.
The Lakers had several chances in the first half, including a goal wiped off by a razor-thin offside call, but, despite an 11-3 edge in shots, the Lakers went into the break scoreless.
Greta DeLoach would change all that early in the second period, rifling a shot into the far side top-corner from the edge of the box. It was DeLoach's 19
th goal of the season and 10
th straight game with a goal.
Cecilia Steinwascher forced the issue down the end line ten minutes later, beating the defense then centering a pass for
Madie Knaggs, who was able to score through a deflection to double the advantage.
Late in the game, a
Makenna Schoolman throw put
Kennedy Bearden in a dangerous position and she played a perfect cross to the back post for
Taylor Reid to tap in, giving the freshman 20 points for the season.
Kendall Robertson picked up her fourth straight shutout with a pair of saves in the win.
The Lakers, having already wrapped up a regular season championship and the top seed in the GLIAC Tournament, will finish out conference play Sunday in Big Rapids, Michigan. @GVSUSoccer will provide live coverage links and updates on Twitter.
