The Grand Valley State Women's Basketball Team will open up at home for their 2021-22 campaign against the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Friday and Maryville on Saturday. After playing in an exhibition game at Michigan last week, the Lakers are excited to be back to a normal schedule after only playing conference opponents last year during the pandemic.

The Lakers finished the 2020-2021 season with a record of 14-6 and placed second in the GLIAC. They completed their season in their sixth straight NCAA National Tournament appearance in a loss to Ashland in the opening round. This year, the Lakers were picked to finish first in the GLIAC South Division in the Preseason Coaches' Poll.

The Lakers return 10 players, including senior leading scorers Emily Spitzley (12.6 PPG) and Hannah Kulas (12.1 PPG), and introduce seven freshmen to the team. Grand Valley State also returns senior point guard Qay Stanton and senior All-GLIAC Defender Samantha Gehrls. Sophomores Ellie Droste, Rylie Bisballe, and Hadley Miller are back for their second year with the Lakers after playing substantial minutes last year as freshmen.

GVSU will play UMSL at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12. The Tritons finished last season with a record of 12-8. The last matchup between the Lakers and the Tritons was in 2019 when GVSU traveled to St. Louis and defeated UMSL in a 78-44 win on the road. Grand Valley State leads the overall series 3-2.

The Lakers will play Maryville University on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 4:00 p.m. The Saints finished .500 last year with a record of 11-11. Maryville and GVSU last matched up in 2019 where the Lakers defeated the Saints by a 44-point margin in a 94-50 victory on the road. The Lakers are looking for their fourth win against the Saints as GVSU leads the series 3-0.
