WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Grand Valley State baseball team increased their winning streak to six games after a doubleheader sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan on Monday morning/afternoon by scores of 5-3 and 18-2. The Lakers improve to 6-1 overall.
Game 1 (W, 5-3)
The two teams were scoreless and had combined for just three hits entering the sixth inning before an
Anthony Cocco triple and a
Jordan Chandler walk and stolen base gave the Lakers second and third with nobody out. Junior
Blake Vershum enter the game as a pinch hitter and laid down a bunt, scoring both Cocco and Chandler to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead.
GVSU added two more runs on a
Nathan Logan triple to right center and another run on
Ryan Lorber's RBI bunt to bring the Laker lead to 5-0. WV Wesleyan would add three runs in the sixth and threaten in the seventh, but did not score.
Sophomore
Sam Leck earned the win, throwing 5.2 innings, while allowing four hits, three runs (0 earned), one walk, and six strikeouts. Senior
Luke Hargis came in to finish the sixth inning before closer
Michael Barno pitched a scoreless seventh inning to garner his second save of the season.
Chandler went 2-for-2 with two walks and Logan totaled 2 RBI to pace the Lakers offense.
Game 2 (W, 18-2)
GVSU's offense exploded in game two, scoring four runs in the first, three in the second, and six in the third to open up a 13-2 lead through three innings of play. Senior
Joe Laudont ripped a two-run double and freshman
Nathan Logan recorded a two-run in single in the first inning, while junior
Jordan Chandler blasted a three-run homerun in the second inning, his first of the season.
Freshman
Austin Brown was credited with the win, tossing 3.1 innings of scoreless ball, while striking out five. Juniors
Anthony Zurke and
Nathan Wargolet each threw clean innings in relief.
Freshmen
Anthony Fleischauer and Logan each had a team-high two hits with Chandler driving in three runs.
The Lakers will play Tiffin tomorrow afternoon (Mar. 3) with the first pitch set for 12:30 PM. The Dragons are currently 6-0 to start the season.
