GVSU finishes Tune-Up, hosts GLIAC action next weekend

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State track and field teams completed the final indoor meet of the regular season at home in the GVSU Tune-Up. 
 
On the track, freshman Brittany Rainey took first place in the hurdles with a 9.12 second finish.  Camryn Gabriel (mile; 5:08.78) and senior Abby Clasen (400m; 59.65) collected second and third place finishes in their respective events.  In the 3000m race, freshman Kayce Rypma showed a strong performance with a third place finish in 10:32.46.  The women's 1600m relay team of Andee Kimes, Abby Clasen, Katie Westfall and Madison Shroda teamed up for a 4:10.65 finish.
 
The women dominated the meet from the field as a handful of student-athletes owned their events.  Erika Lechner (14.03m; shot put) and Franesha Robinson-Mitchell (18.44m; weight throw) defeated their respective competition with provisional qualifications, while Rachel Dolan (3.59m; pole vault), Jenna Doyle (1.61m; high jump) and Angelica Floyd (5.97m; long jump) garnered GVSU first place finishes in the pole vault and jumps. 
 
The Laker duo of Tyler Kirkwood (8.274) and Tyler Mansfield (8.278) finished one after the other in the 60m hurdles, claiming first and second place.  In the 400m race, junior Matt McLaughlin (49.73) and sophomore Jaylen Hasan (49.76) swept the competition from the first heat.  Also posting a first-place finish was Andrew McFarland with a 22.33 second finish in the men's 200m race.  Elijah Bourdeau, Matt McLaughlin, Hasan and Noah Fuerst combined for a 3:25.17 time in the 1600m relay. 
 
The Laker men were well represented in the field events and posted numerous top-three finishes.  Ryan Stefanko (15.31m) and Tommy Cwiok (15.30m) placed second and third, respectively, in the shot put, while Hunter Harding (19.85m) and Leon White (17.91m) earned provisional qualifications and posted a one-two finish for the Lakers in the weight throw. 
 
In the long jump, Jarek Malatestinic recorded a 5.97 leap, claiming second place. Freshmen Logan Clark (4.32m) and Max Rauch (4.17m) represented the Lakers in the pole vault from the first and third spots. 
 
GVSU hosts the GLIAC Championships next weekend (Feb. 29-March 1) before heading to Birmingham, Ala. on March 13 for the Division II Indoor National Championships.
