HAMMOND, Ind. – The #3 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team continued their lights out defense, holding their opponent under 45 points for the sixth consecutive game, in a 64-42 win over Purdue Northwest on the road Thursday night. The Lakers move their winning streak to six games and improve to 19-1 overall and 11-1 in GLIAC play.
Senior center
Cassidy Boensch moved into fourth all-time in program history for points scored in a career, surpassing Marie Thomas (1,610 points) after moving into fifth place just last Thursday in the win over Michigan Tech. Boensch finished with 20 points and seven rebounds to lead the Laker offensive attack and senior guard
Jenn DeBoer posted a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds). As a team, GVSU shot a season-low 36.8% from the field, but took advantage at the charity stripe, shooting 15-20 (75%). The Lakers dominated points in the paint (28-14) and held Purdue Northwest to just 28.1% shooting from the field and 23.8% behind the arc.
GVSU came out sluggish in the first quarter with neither team gaining much of an advantage early. The Lakers would lead 10-6 at the end of the quarter before beginning the second quarter on an 11-4 run to seize a 21-10 lead with 6:38 left in the half. Purdue Northwest was held without a basket for the final 4:04 of the half and GVSU took a 33-14 advantage into the half.
The lead continued to grow in the third quarter as the Lakers pushed the margin to a game-high 31 points at 49-18 with 1:45 remaining in the third frame. GVSU cruised in the fourth quarter to their sixth win in a row and completed the season sweep of Purdue Northwest.
GVSU will travel to Kenosha, Wis. for a battle with Parkside on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM ET.
