The Grand Valley State track and field teams completed the Conference Crossover (Jan 24) and Gladstein Invitational (Jan. 24-25).

Conference Crossover
The Laker women swept the top five places in the pole vault competition, with sophomore Kassidie Stimmel claiming first at 3.89m.  Elli Kimes (3.74m) and Carly Livingston (3.59m) finished second and third, respectively.  Freshmen Alessia Olhava and Jenna Doyle took the second and third spots in the high jump after clearing a 1.58m leap.

The men's squad showed strong performances in the field events as well.  Joshua Veldheer earned first place with a final height of 1.92m in the high jump.  There were three provisional marks that were meant in the pole vault, including Jacob Battani (1st; 5.02m), Alex Peskin (2nd; 4.87m) and Marcus Lubbers (2nd; 4.87m).

The Conference Crossover was comprised of student-athletes from Grand Valley State, Hillsdale, Lake Superior State, Davenport and Tiffin.

"The pole vault crew had a couple athletes take the next step in clearing bars," said head coach Jerry Baltes.

Gladstein Invitational
Bobbie Goodwin (20.69m) and Franesha Robinson-Mitchell (18.06m) took second and fourth place, respectively, in the weight throw behind two competitors from Indiana.  Elizabeth Pyles finished fifth in the shot put with a launch of 13.34m.

Nicole Sreenan defeated the competition in the 60m dash, as she crossed the finish line in 7.55 seconds, with Angelica Floyd narrowly trailing her with a time of 7.60, good for third place.  The current GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week, Klaudia O'Malley, finished the mile run in 5:00.05, earning second place.  In the 800m race, O'Malley (2:17.86) and Molly McLaughlin (2:19.32) finished one after another in the seventh and eighth places.

The 4x400m relay team of Sreenan, Jessica Eby, Asia Smith and Sarah Beulla claimed second place with a finish of 3:48.97, just one second behind Indiana's team.

Justin Scavarda (3rd; 17.11m), Tommy Cwiok (6th; 15.19) and Ryan Stefanko (9th; 14.70m) represented GVSU in the men's shot put.  Scavarda also took second in the weight throw with a distance of 19.37m, where he was joined by Leon White (3rd; 18.39m) and Hunter Harding (4th; 18.32m).

Emmanuel Arop led the Lakers from the track with a finish of 6.88 seconds, good for second place.  Daniel Walker (2nd; 22.30) and Tyler Mansfield (11th; 23.40) finished the 200m dash, while Noah Fuerst (2nd; 1:53.64), Johnathan Groendyk (3rd; 1:53.84) and Tyler Walters (6th; 1:54.78) competed in the 800m race.

In the mile run, Dennis Mbuta claimed fourth place with a 4:10.63 finish, followed by Walters and Groendyk filling the sixth and seventh spots, respectively.  Mbuta broke the GVSU indoor record in the 600m race, as he finished in 1:18.93, earning a third place title at the Gladstein Invitational.  The previous record was set in 2009 by Todd Schuster at 1:19.77.

The men's 4x400m relay team of Walker, Alexander Porter, Thomas Moreman and Fuerst placed fifth in 3:22.59.

"It was great to get away from our home track and see some different competition," said Baltes.  "Both IU squads are very strong, and their men should compete for a Big Ten title at the end of the season."

The Lakers return home on Saturday, Feb. 1 for the GVSU Mike Lints Alumni Open.
