#10 GVSU takes two from Ferris State in their final regular season homestand

GVSU would win by scores of 5-0 and 3-0

The #10 Grand Valley State softball team earned two more wins on Thursday night, sweeping the Ferris State Bulldogs in their final two regular season home games at GVSU Softball Field. The Lakers took game one by a 5-0 margin before another 3-0 shutout victory in the nightcap as they improve to 38-8 overall and 22-6 in GLIAC play heading into their final regular season weekend.

GVSU got a pair of strong pitching performances from senior Allison Lipovsky and freshman Samantha Gehrls. In game one, Lipovsky improved to 22-2 on the season after tossing a complete game shotout where she struck out 14 while issuing zero walks all afternoon. Gehrls improved her record to 8-2 this season after she tossed six innings of shutout softball before Lipovsky came back in for her first save of the season. The duo would combine for 20 strikeouts, three walks, and just 11 hits allowed.

At the plate, six different Lakers knocked two hits, led by sophomore Nikoma Holmen who finished 2-6 with three RBI's and her eighth homer of the season. Senior Shannon Flaherty also tallied two hits and two RBI's while Goble finished 2-6 (1 RBI, 2 R) and Kelcie LaTour 2-4. Freshman Morgan Wagner also tallied and RBI double on the afternoon.

In all, GVSU rattled off 15 hits en route to their eight total runs, including a homer and triple each as well as three doubles.

Game One (W, 5-0)
Lipovsky got things going quickly in the first, striking out the side to put the Laker bats up where they would get some early damage done. Goble delivered the first run of the game with an RBI double to center to score Rieger from second base before Holmen launched her eighth homer of the season to put the Lakers up 3-0 after one.

Both teams would remain scoreless over the next three innings as Lipovsky stayed hot with eight strikeouts in the nine total outs recorded. GVSU would add the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI double from Wagner before a single from Flaherty that scored Wagner a batter later.

Lipovsky would tally three more K's over the next three innings as she would end up with 14 punchouts on the day.

Holmen ended the first game of the twin bill with a 2-3 performance and two RBI's while Goble, Wagner, and Flaherty delivered the other RBI's.

Game Two (W, 3-0)
Game two of the afternoon's doubleheader got off to a much slower start, as the teams combined for just six hits through their first six at-bats.

GVSU finally broke the drought in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a Holmen RBI groundout after Goble led the inning off with a triple down the right field line to give the Lakers the 1-0 lead.

Gehrls kept steady in the circle, delivering another shutout inning in the top of the fifth before the Laker offense would add two more in the bottom of the inning. After Henning reached on a Bulldog error, Flaherty knocked an RBI double to left field before scoring on yet another Bulldog miscue after Rhynard layed down a perfect bunt single.

Gehrls would find her first bit of trouble in the top of the sixth when the Bulldogs loaded the bases with no outs. She would tally the first out thanks to a soft grounder right back at her where she threw home to deny the run before doing the same exact thing with the next batter but this time Rhynard threw a laser back to first base for the double play to get out of the jam.

GVSU would bring Lipovsky in for the final inning where she would deliver her first save of the season as the Lakers took game two of the nightcap, 3-0.
