The No. 11-nationally ranked Grand Valley State softball team picked up two more wins at the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. when they downed Edinboro, 9-1, and Hillsdale, 2-1. It was two exciting victories as freshman
Hannah Beatus picked up her first career no-hitter against Edinboro while sophomore
Nikoma Holmen knocked a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to finish off the Chargers.
The Lakers will play two more games in the Sunshine State as they close out spring break with games against Lewis and No. 23 Southern New Hampshire at 1:30 PM and 3:45 PM, respectively.
Beatus spun five innings of no-hit ball as the Lakers won by mercy rule, 9-0. It was nearly a perfect game as she surrendered just one walk all morning while striking out six. The Laker bats were hot and once again led by freshman
Lydia Goble who went 2-3 with three RBI's and a pair of runs scored. Senior
Kaylie Rhynard also went 2-3 as she picked up an RBI and run scored as well. Sophomore right fielder
Brooke Henning delivered a pair of hits as she drove in two while second baseman
Taylor Rieger drove in a run with a single as well.
Senior righty
Allison Lipovsky improved to 7-0 on the season as she tossed a complete game two-hitter against the Chargers, allowing one run while striking out 10. It was Holmen who was the hero at the plate, as she delivered both RBI's to push the Lakers to the walkoff win in a rematch of last year's first and third round NCAA Midwest Region Tournament. Rieger and
Joanna Cirrincione accounted for the Lakers other three hits.
Game One vs. Edinboro (W, 9-0 – 5 Inn.)
It was a slow start for both teams at the plate as Beatus and Nasca of Edinboro would retire 11 of the first 12 batters before GVSU would get the scoring started in the third. After a
Bailey Thatcher single with one out, a single off the bat of Goble would turn into a little league home run after a pair of throwing errors by the Fighting Scotts allowed her to fly around all of the bases and touch home for the Lakers second run.
Beatus got three swinging strikeouts in the third before GVSU would start to pile it on in the fourth as they would record six runs on seven hits, all with two outs. A Flaherty walk, Cirincionne single, and Thatcher walk would load the bases before a Goble single to right would score two. Goble would then steal second and allow Thatcher to score on the throw. Rieger then singled to score Goble before Holmen would deliver her own RBI single. Henning then capped off the scoring with a two-run double down the right field line to put the Lakers up 9-0.
Beatus would allow her first baserunner in the fourth after issuing a leadoff walk but got back to back pop outs and a strikeout to get out of it. A groundout followed by two straight K's would secure the sophomore's first career no-hitter and give the Lakers their 11th win of the season.
Game Two vs. Hillsdale (W, 2-1)
A two out walk and error would put runners on first and second for the Chargers in the top of the first but a Lipovsky strikeout would end the early threat and allow the Lakers to strike first in the bottom of the frame.
A Holmen single to center field would score Goble, who walked before advancing to second on a Rieger single with one out to put the Lakers up 1-0. Lipovsky would force the Chargers into a 1-2-3 inning and GVSU would put two on in the bottom of the second but couldn't push anything across before Hillsdale would tie it up in the third.
A hit batter, a single, and a walk would load the bases with one out for the Chargers as a sac fly to right field would knot things up 1-1. Neither team would produce another hit until the fifth inning where both squads managed one but couldn't make anything of the rare offense.
GVSU had a prime opportunity to break things open in the sixth as they would load the bases thanks to a walk, error, bunt single from Cirrincione but a weak grounder to the pitcher would make for an easy out at the plate to end the threat. Luckily for the Lakers, Lipovsky would strike out the side and give them one last chance for a walkoff.
Holmen would deliver on the opportunity after Rhynard drew a one out walk and stole second before she would smash a single to center for the game-winning hit and run.
