No. 17 Lakers storm back for 14-10 road win at IUP Sunday

GVSU scores nine unanswered goals to close out win over Crimson Hawks

INDIANA, Pa. – The No. 17 Grand Valley State Lakers scored nine straight goals in the second half to storm back for a 14-10 win over the Indiana (PA) Crimson Hawks Sunday (Feb. 24) afternoon at Miller Stadium. The Lakers win both road matches of their opening weekend to start the season 2-0.

Abbi O'Neal and Carly Shisler each scored four goals and Sarah Stagaard scored three to lead the GVSU attack. Shisler also dished a pair of assists while O'Neal had three. Skylar Simmers also recorded a pair of goals to go along with an assist while Kelley Fitzgerald found the back of the cage as well. Abigail Dengler made nine saves on 19 shots faced.

After GVSU took the first two shots of the match, IUP rattled off three straight and Dengler made a pair of saves before the Crimson Hawks broke through with the first two goals of the day. O'Neal would respond with a goal of her own, one of her three in the first half, but the Crimson Hawks would take an 8-3 lead into the half.

Shisler rattled off a pair of goals right at the start of the second half to get the Lakers back within three, but then IUP answered with two goals of their own to take a 10-5 lead. O'Neal would strike again at the 19:00 mark to begin what would wind up as a 9-0 Laker run to close out the match. Stagaard scored with 11:30 left to tie the game and, three minutes later, Shisler found the back of the cage to give the Lakers their first lead of the match, which they would never relinquish.

GVSU is back in action on March 3, when they head west to Colorado for a Spring Break trip, beginning with a neutral site showdown with Westminster at the campus of Colorado Mesa. GVSULakers.com will provide links to live coverage and @GVSUWLAX will provide live Twitter updates.
