CALEDONIA, Mich. – The No. 2 Grand Valley State Lakers capped off the regular season with a 7-0 win over the Davenport Panthers Friday night to clinch an outright regular season GLIAC championship. The Lakers have now pitched 13 straight shutouts, matching the longest single-season streak since 2013, and go the entire nine-game conference slate without conceding. GVSU improves to 16-1 on the year and finish 9-0 in conference.
Ava Cook and
Chantel Carranza each scored twice to pace the Laker attack. It was senior
Riko Sagara that opened the scoring in the 15' when she finished off a combination from
Darline Radamaker and Carranza. Cook would score just three minutes later, taking a cross from
Caitie Baron and beating the keeper in a one-on-one scenario. In the 33' it was
Sydney O'Donnell with an acrobatic finish off a back-heel feed from Carranza. Carranza would finally break through herself in the 36' after a well-rolled ball by Sagara to put her behind the Panthers' back line.
Cook scored again in the 41' when Sagara ripped a shot that was saved, but Cook was there to pound home the rebound to add to the lead.
Lauren Ross provided the icing on the cake when
Morgan Krause played her through and just three touches later, the ball was in the back of the net. Carranza would score the only goal of the second half, scoring in the 57' off a tight pass from
Chelsea Graves in the box to round out the scoring.
The Lakers will be the top seed in the GLIAC Tournament, which begins Sunday (Nov. 10) with the quarterfinals at 1 PM against 8-seed Northern Michigan. The match will be aired on ESPN3 and GVSULakers.com will provide links to live stats and video while @GVSUSoccer provides live Twitter updates.
