CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The Grand Valley State Lakers earned a second straight victory with a 75-69 win over the Ohio Dominican Panthers Saturday evening in their first neutral site matchup of the year on the campus of Cedarville University. The Lakers win both of their games in the Don Callan Classic and improve to 5-1 on the season, all against regional opponents, to continue an impressive start to the year.
Jake Van Tubbergen once again paced the Lakers with his second double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and snagging 11 rebounds on the day. The two-time defending GLIAC Player of the Week was 6-10 from the field and 5-7 from the free throw line.
Christian Negron narrowly missed his second double-double of the year with 12 points and nine rebounds.
The Lakers started strong, jumping out to a 12-5 lead, but the Panthers would go on an 10-0 run to take a three-point advantage. The teams would stay neck-and-neck for several minutes, with a
Steven Lloyd layup giving the Lakers a 24-23 lead with just over four minutes to go in the first half. As the grind continued down the stretch of the first stanza, a
Jayden Hodgson three-pointer would cap off a 35-27 lead for GVSU at halftime.
The Lakers would keep ODU at arm's length the rest of the night, never trailing in the second half, as they earned a win for the second time in as many days. The Lakers are back at home next Saturday (Nov. 30) to host Indiana Tech at 2:00 PM. The game will air on ESPN 96.1 FM and stream on the Grand Valley Sports Network.
