#3 Lakers set to begin home schedule on Sunday vs. Lewis

GVSU comes into the matchup 2-0 on the season

ALLENDALE, Mich – The #3 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team will open up their home schedule on Sunday (Nov. 17) against the Lewis Flyers inside the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena at 1:00 PM. These two teams met twice last year including in the Midwest Regional semifinals in which the Lakers came away with a 72-55 win. Last November, Lewis defeated GVSU 72-66 in a home game for the Flyers. The Lakers come into Sunday's showdown with a 2-0 record, while Lewis enters with a 2-1 record.
 
Last weekend GVSU traveled to St. Louis to take on a pair of GLVC opponents. On Friday, the Lakers defeated Missouri-St. Louis 78-44 to open the season before cruising to an easy victory on Saturday over Maryville, 94-50. Senior center Cassidy Boensch led the team in scoring in each of the two games with 17 points and 19 points respectively. The Au. Gres, Mich. native added 14 rebounds, 10 blocks, nine assists, and five steals total across the two games. Senior forward Maddie Dailey scored 17 points with five rebounds and five assists in Saturday's game against Maryville, while freshman Haley Swing scored 10 points (3-4 FG) in her college debut on Friday against UMSL. As a team, the Lakers totaled 33 assists against Maryville, which tied a school record set against Michigan Tech in 1985.
 
GVSU leads the all-time series with Lewis, 13-9 including an 8-2 record in the last 10 matchups. The two teams have squared off in the NCAA DII Midwest Regional twice over the past four years. GVSU won last season and in 2016 at Ashland in the regional quarterfinals by a score of 72-70 on a game-winning shot by Janae Langs with four seconds left.
 
Lewis opened their season last weekend at home against a pair of GLIAC schools in Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. The Flyers fell to the Huskies 73-63 last Saturday, but bounced back on Sunday to defeat the Wildcats 65-41. Senior forward Rachel Hinders is averaging 15.5 points per game and nine rebounds per game in the team's first two games, while a trio of other Flyers are averaging double-digit points per game. As a team the Flyers shot 45.2% from the field and a solid 42.2% from the behind the arc in their first two games. At the charity stripe, Lewis boasts a 78.3 percent mark.
 
The Flyers defeated Northwood 72-64 on Saturday.
