No. 3 GVSU beats Davenport, 7-0, Sunday

Lakers dominate in final non-conference match of 2019

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 3 Grand Valley State Lakers dominated in the final match before the conference season begins with a 7-0 win over the Davenport Panthers Sunday (Oct. 6) afternoon in front of 445 fans at the GVSU Soccer Field. Ava Cook and Gianna Parlove each scored twice to lead the Laker attack and help GVSU improve to 7-1 on the season.
The Lakers have won four straight contests, all via shutouts, and outscored their opponents 19-0 during that stretch. Cook, the reigning GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week, continued her tear with the game-winning goal in the 16', bullying her way down the left flank and striking a liner into the far side-nettting. Just two minutes later, Parlove would collect a blocked shot and ping it off the keepers up-stretched hands, off the crossbar, and in to double the lead.
A nifty move by Cook would provide another dagger just three minutes later, juggling the ball to herself over a defender and blistering the far corner net for her second of the day. Cook now has 11 goals through eight games this season. That would be all the scoring in the first half, with the Lakers leading 3-0 at intermission.

It was a quick start to the second half, with GVSU scoring off the opening whistle. Chelsea Graves worked into space and centered the ball for Parlove at the top of the box, who rolled the ball past the keeper just inside the left post for her second of the afternoon. In the 59' Cate Brown served a free kick from the wing in front of goal for OIivia Trombley to head home. Chantel Carranza would score her fifth of the year off a rebound after a Sydney O'Donnell shot in the 62' and freshman Brooke Russell scored her first career goal in the 88' off a nice combo from O'Donnell and Abby Willerer for the extra point.

The Lakers will begin GLIAC play this Friday (Oct. 11) when they host the Parkside Rangers in the second Friday Nights Under the Lights showdown of the season. GVSULakers.com will provide links to live video and stats while @GVSUSoccer provides live Twitter updates.
