PREVIEW: GVSU Volleyball Midwest Region Crossover

GVSU will take on three teams from the GLVC across the two day tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team will compete in the Midwest Region Crossover this weekend at The Volleyball Academy Club in Indianapolis, Indiana. The crossover features every team from the GLIAC, GLVC, and GMAC in the nation's largest collegiate volleyball tournament where each team plays three matches. GVSU will take on Missouri S&T on Friday at 2:30 P.M. before playing Saturday against #10 Lewis at 10:00 A.M. and GLVC-leading Drury at 4:00 P.M.
 
The Lakers, who are 8-9 overall and 4-5 in GLIAC play, are coming off a weekend split as they fell to #16 Ferris State 3-1 on Friday and defeated Northwood 3-0 on Saturday. In the loss against Ferris, sophomore Ali Thompson had a career-high 22 kills and followed that up with 16 kills in the match vs. Northwood. For her efforts, Thompson was named GLIAC South Player of the Week. The Cincinnati, Ohio native finished the weekend with 38 kills, 18 digs, and seven service aces.
 
Through the half-way point of the GLIAC season, the Lakers are tied for the league-lead in total blocks with 140 and services aces with 113. GVSU ranks fifth in kills per set (12.47), assists per set (11.53), and digs per set (16.15), and are ranked seventh in attack percentage (.177). The GLIAC standings feature Ferris State, Michigan Tech, Saginaw Valley, and Ashland at the top of the conference, while GVSU and three other teams (Davenport, Northern Michigan, and Northwood) are all tied at 4-5 and fifth place in the standings.
 
vs. Missouri S&T (Friday, Oct. 18) – 2:30 P.M.
 
The Miners support a 14-5 overall and 4-3 GLVC record while they are currently riding a three-match win streak. S&T started the season 4-0 by sweeping the Miner Invitational followed by a 3-1 weekend at the Alabama-Huntsville Tournament. After starting GLVC play 1-3, the Miners have since defeated Maryville, Quincy, and Truman State to get above. 500 in league play.
 
The two teams last met in 2015 at the Midwest Region Crossover where the Lakers won 3-1.
 
vs. #10 Lewis (Saturday, Oct. 19) – 10:00 A.M.
 
The Flyers were ranked as high as sixth in the AVCA National Poll as they started the season 16-1. After a pair of GLVC losses last weekend to Indianapolis and Bellarmine, Lewis dropped to 10th in the poll and are currently 16-3 overall and 5-2 in conference play. The lone non-conference loss for the Flyers was to Southwest Minnesota State in the Colorado Premier Challenge.
 
GVSU fell to Lewis in their last matchup which was at the 2017 Midwest Region Crossover by a score of 3-0.
 
vs. Drury (Saturday, Oct. 19) – 4:00 P.M.
 
The Panthers are currently on an eight-game winning streak and are a perfect 7-0 in GLVC play. After beginning the season 2-6, the Panthers have rattled off 11 wins in their last 12 matches to sit atop the league standings. Drury is 2-2 against AVCA top-25 teams having beaten #12 Rockhurst and #18 Northwest Missouri State, while dropping matches to #23 Central Washington and #7 Northern State.
 
Drury defeated GVSU 3-1 in the 2016 Midwest Region Crossover.
