The Grand Valley State softball team remained undefeated at the 2018 GLIAC Tournament after taking down Tiffin in their second game of the day, 4-1. With the victory, the Lakers improve to 39-7 overall while Tiffin falls to 26-27. GVSU will now play Davenport tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 PM for a spot in the championship game on Sunday (May 4). If the Lakers beat the Panthers, GVSU will head into Sundays championship undefeated and will have to win just one game on Sunday to claim the title. If GVSU loses, they will play again at 2:00 PM for a spot in the championship.
In what turned out to be a pitcher's duel for most of the game, GVSU got their offense going just enough to push across four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to ensure the victory. On the mound for the Lakers was junior
Allison Lipovsky, who pitched a complete game while striking out 10 and walking just one. Lipovsky gave up just six hits and allowed one run en route to her 18th win of the season to improve to 18-3.
Supplying the clutch runs for the Lakers was
Teagan Shomin,
Kaylie Rhynard, and
Brooke Henning as they all delivered RBI's, while Shomin, Rhynard,
Tanner Kiessel, and
Bailey Thatcher were the four Lakers to cross home plate.
Kaitlyn Plocinski led GVSU with two hits on the game, with Shomin, Rhynard, Henning, and Holmen all added one as well.
The teams combined for just three hits in the first four innings of play, two of which came from Lakers, before Tiffin would threaten in the fifth and the Lakers would deliver in the bottom half of the inning. After a Tiffin single and a Laker error, the Dragons had runners on first and second with just one out. A sac bunt pushed both runners into scoring position but Lipovsky induced a groundout to
Shannon Flaherty at shortstop to end the threat and keep the game tied 0-0.
A Ramos walk to start the bottom of the fifth got the ball rolling, as Plocinski followed it up with a single to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a Dragon pitching change, a pinch running
Kayla Plastiak was thrown out at third after a fielder's choice from Thatcher. Shomin then delivered an RBI single to right field that scored
Tanner Kiessel before Thatcher was able to sprint home after an errant throw from the rightfielder as Shomin advanced all the way to third. Rhynard then reached on a fielder's choice and a great slide from Shomin to avoid the tag at home plate allowed her to score to put GVSU up 3-0. Henning then single down the left field line to score Rhynard from second after she stole the base for the 4-0 lead.
Tiffin couldn't get anything going in the top of the sixth and GVSU managed to get the bases loaded in the bottom half but failed to push any runs across as the score would remain 4-0 heading into the final inning.
Back to back singles put runners on first and second with one out for Tiffin, before another two-out single loaded the bases. The next Tiffin batter was then hit by a pitch to bring a run in before Lipovsky got one final groundout to secure the victory.
Again, the Lakers will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they as set to face off against the Davenport Panthers, who are also 2-0, at noon.
