No. 16 Lakers down No. 8 Indianapolis, 17-10, Thursday

GVSU claims fifth straight win and remains undefeated in GLIAC play

ALLENDALE, Mich. –
The No. 16 Grand Valley State Lakers opened their home season with authority and a 17-10 win over the No. 8 Indianapolis Greyhounds in Great Lakers Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at the GVSU Lacrosse Field Thursday night. GVSU improves to 6-2 on the year and 4-0 in the GLIAC while Indianapolis drops to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

GVSU out-shot Indianapolis 41-29, went 16-17 on clear attempts and earned 13 free position attempts compared to four for the Greyhounds. Ashley Bailey and Carly Shisler led the Lakers with four goals apiece. Shisler added two assists for a team-high six points. Abbi O'Neal had three goals and an assist and Kelley Fitzgerald had three assists to go along with a goal.

The Lakers fed off the home crowd for three quick goals to start the match. O'Neal scored a half-minute into the game to get the Lakers on the board. Two minutes later Erika Neumen doubled the lead before a Fitzgerald goal put the Lakers up by three four minutes in. Indianapolis responded with three straight goals of their own to tie the match, but the Lakers would out-score the Hounds 5-1 the rest of the period for an 8-4 lead at the break.

The Lakers would keep the pressure on the entire second half and keep the Hounds at arms-length to coast to victory. The Lakers look for their sixth straight win on Saturday (March 31) when they host McKendree at 1:00 PM. GVSULakers.com and @GVSUWLAX on Twitter will have live coverage of the match.
