Lakers Claim Wins Over West Chester (11-1) and Illinois-Springfield (4-0)

GVSU completes Florida trip with 10-2 mark

Grand Valley State swept a pair of softball games Saturday in Clermont, Florida to end its spring trip with a 10-2 record, including a win over then No. 1-ranked Minnesota State. GVSU closed the trip with an 11-1 win over West Chester (7-5) and a 4-0 regional win over Illinois-Springfield (9-5). 

Game 1 - GVSU 11, West Chester 1

Grand Valley State scored four runs on six hits in the bottom of the first. Kaylie Rhynard reached first on a bunt single, followed by a Taylor Rieger double that scored Rhynard. Lelcie LaTour delivered a two out, 2-run HR to center to up the lead to 3-0. GVSU then loaded the bases with three consecutive singles by Shannon Flaherty, Bailey Thatcher and Brooke Henning. Taylor Kiessel walked to score Flaherty.

The Lakers added three runs on four hits in the second inning as Rieger homered to left with one out and Nikoma Holmen, who singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Flaherty singled to score Holmen and Thatcher tripled to plate Flaherty to give GVSU a 7-0 lead.  

GVSU put the game out of reach with four more runs in the third on four hits, all after the first two batters were retired. Rhynard walked and Rieger then doubled to score Rhynard. Holmen smashed a 2-run HR to center to clear the bases. LaTour walked and Flaherty doubled before Thatcher singled in a run. 

Allie Grys improved to 4-1 on the year, yielding one run on six hits through five innings with five strikeouts. Rieger was 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored, while Thatcher was 3-for-3 with two RBI and Flaherty was 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Holmen collected two hits and two RBI and LaTour drove in two runs with a hit. 

Game 2 - GVSU 4, Illinois-Springfield 0

GVSU took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with a Jessica Ramos walk and a 2-run HR to left center on a full count pitch off the bat of Henning. The Lakers added a single run in the fifth on a hit and an error. Ramos reached on an error and Kayla Plastiak, who pinch ran for Ramos, scored on a Rhynard double to left center. Holmen doubled to lead off the sixth and scored on a LaTour singled to drive in Holmen and give the Lakers a 4-0 lead. 

Allison Lipovsky improved to 6-2 on the year with the complete-game, 4-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts and no walks.
