QUINCY, Ill. – The Grand Valley State Lakers got a scorching shooting performance to spark a 94-65 win over the McKendree Bearcats in regional action at the Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Illinois on Saturday (Dec. 15). The win improves the Lakers to 8-2 on the year while McKendree drops to 4-5 on the season.
Ben Lubitz shot lights out, going 9-10 from the floor and 5-6 from three for a career-high 23 points while
Jake Van Tubbergen recorded his second double-double of the year with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Overall, five Lakers scored in double figures as the Lakers shot a season-best .587 (37-63) from the field, going 12-20 from three.
After the teams traded buckets each of their first three trips down the floor, Lubitz and the Laker bench began to pull away after the first media timeout. Lubitz had 15 of his 23 points in the first half to help GVSU to a 16-point lead at the break. Out of intermission,
Hunter Hale fed a streaking Van Tubbergen down low for an emphatic two-handed slam to secure momentum for the rest of the game as the Lakers coasted to a win.
