The Grand Valley State women's cross country team captured its sixth NCAA National Title with a dominant performance in the 6K race after they scored 41 points, while Sarah Berger became the third different GVSU athlete in program history to win a NCAA Cross Country National Title on Saturday (Dec. 1) in Pittsburgh, Pa.
 
The Lakers won the meet by 42 points as U-Mary finished second with 83 points, followed by Adams State (3rd; 90 points) Western Colorado (4th; 98 points) and Colorado Mines (5th; 252 points) to around out the top-five.
 
GVSU had five athletes claim All-American honors with top-26 finishes that included Berger, Allie Ludge, Hanna Groeber, Gina Patterson and Madison Goen. Berger, won her first cross country national title and is now a two-time All-American, while Gina Patterson finishes her career with the Lakers as a three-time All-American and Allie Ludge captured All-American honors for the second straight year. Also earning All-American allocates for the first time in their career were Groeber and Goen.
 
Berger, led the way for the Lakers as she was crowned the individual National Champion with a time of 22:07.7, while Ludge and Groeber placed fifth and sixth with times of 22:39.7 and 22:40.6. Patterson was the next GVSU athlete to cross the finish line in 22:53.3 for ninth place. Goen was the fifth Laker to score as she finished 26th with a time of 23:16.6.
 
Also running for GVSU was Stacey Metzger and Jessica Gockley. Metzger finished with a time of 24:29.1, while Gockley finished in 25:39.5.
 
 Berger, also became the third cross country athlete to claim an individual national title as she joins former GVSU Greats,Kendra Foley and Mandi Zemba, who have won a cross country titles.
 
Under the guidance of head coach Jerry Baltes, the GVSU women's cross country and track & field program have now won a combined 10 NCAA Division II National Championships. GVSU has also won six cross country championships since 2010.
