GVSU Claims 79-62 GLIAC Road Win In Men's Basketball

Lakers now 6-1 overall and 2-0 in GLIAC action

Box Score The Grand Valley State men's basketball team improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in GLIAC action with its 79-62 road win at Purdue Northwest Saturday afternoon. The Lakers will return home for a pair of league games beginning Thursday (Dec. 6) versus Ashland at 8 p.m.

Trailing 8-7 early in the contest, GVSU went on a  7-0 run that junior guard Hunter Hale started with a three-pointer. Sophomore forward Jake Van Tubbergen added a pair of free throws and Hale drilled another three-pointer to give the Lakers a 14-8 lead they would never relinquish. Grand Valley State built its largest lead of the opening 20 minutes (39-25) with a layup from junior guard Jeremiah Ferguson and led 40-30 at the half. Purdue Northwest pulled to within four (43-39) early in the second half, but two Van Tubbergen free throws, a Ferguson layup and a three-pointer from guard Ben Lubitz pushed the GVSU lead to nine (50-41). Senior guard Zach West drilled a three-pointer to give GVSU a 59-45 lead with 10:55 remaining. 

Purdue Northwest pulled to seven (68-61) with 3:38 left in the game, but a Hale jumper, followed by a dunk from Isaiah Brock quickly pushed the lead to 11 (72-61). Grand Valley State held its largest lead of the game (79-62) at the final horn. 

Van Tubbergen tallied a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Hale added 16 points and seven boards. Ferguson chipped in 15 points, six rebounds and four assists. GVSU limited Purdue Northwest to just 32.8 percent shooting from the floor (22-for-67), including 23.3 percent from the three-point line (10-for-43). The Lakers held a 57-36 rebounding advantage (18 off./39 def.) and scored 22 second chance points.
