BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The top-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers pulled out a double-overtime win, 2-1, over the No. 12 Ferris State Bulldogs Friday evening to clinch their 14
th consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular season championship. The Lakers, who still have two matches left this year, improve to 15-0-1 on the season and 7-0-0 in GLIAC play while the Bulldogs, who had their program-best 14-match unbeaten streak snapped, fall to 12-2-2 on the year and 4-1-2 in the league.
After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs struck first at the hour mark, putting the Lakers behind for the first time this season. Just six minutes later, a handball in the penalty area gave the Lakers a PK, which
Cecilia Steinwascher converted for her first goal of the season.
That score would hold until the 105', when a corner kick, inserted by Steinwascher, was juggled around in front of goal before
Haley Dehaan volleyed the ball to herself and lofted a shot over the Bulldog keeper and into the net to ignite the dog pile and celebrate a GLIAC title.
The Lakers, who will be the top seed in the GLIAC Tournament, head to Northwood for a conference contest on Sunday at 12:00 PM. GVSULakers.com will provide links to live stats and video while @GVSUSoccer will live-Tweet the match.
