ALLENDALE, Mich. -- On a day where the No. 1 Grand Valley State Lakers honored their four seniors, the team continued their impressive, undefeated 2018 campaign with a 3-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win over the Ashland Eagles Sunday (Oct. 14) at the GVSU Soccer Field.
Caitie Baron and senior
Tara Lierman both scored and Ashland contributed an early own goal to move the Lakers to 14-0-1 this season and 6-0-0 in the GLIAC while Ashland falls to 8-2-4 overall and 3-1-2 in conference play.
The Lakers jumped out in front a minute into the match when
Ava Cook launched a cross right in front of goal and got a deflection off the Ashland keeper and defender into net for an early lead. Baron would loft a perfectly placed shot into the far corner netting from her right wing position in the 22' to add to the lead. Lierman had a penalty kick opportunity in the 84' after a hand ball and, although she had her PK blocked, she collected the rebound and calmly deposited the rebound into the back of the net.
The Lakers, who drew with Ashland in Ohio last month, avenged their only minor blemish of the year with the win. The Lakers travel to Big Rapids, Michigan for a GLIAC showdown with nationally-ranked Ferris State this Friday (Oct. 19) at 4:00 PM.
