#2 Lakers Fall 5-1 To #3 Columbus State

GVSU returns home Friday for two-game home stand

#2-ranked Grand Valley State dropped a 5-1 decision to #3-ranked Columbus State, Monday at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky. The Lakers host Cedarville for their 2017 home opener on Friday (Sept. 8) at 7 p.m., before a contest against #19 Minnesota State- Mankato Sunday (Sept. 10) for a 12 p.m. start. Both games will be played at the GVSU Soccer Field.
 
The Lakers would strike first at the 12 minute mark of the first half when senior Gabriella Mencotti found junior Tara Lierman in the middle of box from 10 yards out Lierman buried the shot to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
 
The Cougars would score back-to-back goals in the 18th minute and one more goal at the 44 minute mark to end the first half with a 3-1 lead.
 
The Lakers battled throughout the second period, but yielded two more goals for the final margin.
 
Lierman recorded her first goal of the season and Mencotti added one assist to the scoring column.
