The Series
Grand Valley State leads the all-time series with Saginaw Valley State by a 35-11 margin and have won five  consecutive and 13-of-the-last-14 games in the series. The Lakers claimed a 62-56 double overtime decision at Saginaw Valley State a year ago. The Lakers sport a record of 21-2 at Lubbers Stadium versus the Cardinals and a 14-9 mark at Wickes Stadium. From 2002 - 2010, Grand Valley State was ranked either No. 1 or No. 2  in 10 of the 11 meetings with the Cardinals. The lone time SVSU has been ranked higher than GVSU was in the 2003 playoffs and GVSU claimed a 10-3 win at Saginaw Valley State in the playoffs and eventually went on to win the National Championship.

• Grand Valley State is in its 47th season of football and sports a 386-139-3 all-time record. GVSU's .734 winning percentage tops all of college football regardless of division in winning percentage. Michigan ranks second (.730) and Notre Dame third (.728).

• The Lakers are ranked 9th in this weeks AFCA Coaches' poll. GVSU, which opened the season ranked 2nd, has now been ranked in the AFCA preseason top three 12 times since 2002 (16 polls) and the top 10 14 times. The Lakers have been ranked in every AFCA top 25 preseason poll the last 16 years, including a ranking as the number one team in the AFCAweekl  poll an NCAA DII high 88 times since 2002. 

• The GVSU defense has yielded one TD in the last 12 quarters of football.
• The Lakers lead the nation in passing yards allowed per game (58.2 ypg).
• GVSU's 7.8 points per game yielded ranks first in the GLIAC and third in DII.
• GVSU leads the GLIAC and ranks sixth in total defense, yielding 241.2 ypg.
• The Lakers lead the GLIAC and ranks 12th nationally in turnover margin (1.50 pg).
• GVSU leads the nation in pass efficiency defense (61.9).
• Laker opponents have completed 31-of-74 passes for 233 yards and one TD in four games.

• Junior RB Marty Carter has rushed for 490 yards and four TDs on 66 carries this season. He ranks third in the GLIAC and 13th nationally in rushing yards. In addition, Carter is now fourth in all-time rushing yards with 3,287. The top three rushers of all time have come since 2002 with Reggie Spearmon (1999-2002) third at 3,467 yards, Michael Tennessee (2000-2004) second at 3,515 yards and James Berezik (2007-09) first with 3,630 yards. 

• Junior QB Bart Williams has completed 70-of-110 passes for 966  yards and 10 TDs this season. Williams, who is 27-5 all-time as a starter, has moved into third in all-time passing yards with 8,515, completing 546-of-923 passes. Williams is tied for fifth all-time in passing TDs with 89 and he is also fifth in all-time total offense with 8,427 yards.

• Senior WR Brandon Bean became the 17th player in GVSU annals to move past the 100-catch mark in his career (101). Bean, who leads the Lakers with 29 catches for 351 yards in 2017, now has 101 catches for 1,628 yards and 15 TDs.

• Senior tight end Nick Keizer has caught 14 passes for 247 yards and five TDs this season. Keizer is averaging a nations-best 17.6 yards per catch for tight ends. 

• Senior LB Garrett Pougnet moved past the 200-tackle mark as a Laker and now has 208 stops in his career. Pougnet leads the team with 21 tackles in 2017. 

• Senior LB Collin Schlosser appeared in his 40th game for the Lakers at Michigan Tech. Schlosser, who has 17 total tackles in 2017, now has 227 career tackles in his career with GVSU.
