#5 Lakers Takes Down #18 Hawks, Win 2-0

Box Score #5 Grand Valley State won its seventh consecutive game via shutout and improved to 7-2 on the year with a 2-0 non-conference win over #18 Quincy on Wednesday afternoon at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill. The Lakers return home for a key GLIAC tilt on Sunday (Oct. 1) when they host Ferris State (6-4 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) for a 1 p.m. contest at the GVSU Soccer Field.

The Lakers scored first at the 10:52 mark of the first period when senior forward Tracey McCoy intercepted a pass and found the bottom right corner of the net on a breakaway for a 1-0 Laker lead. That would be the only scoring of the first half as both teams carried play at times.

"I was really impressed with our ability to start the match," said head coach Jeff Hosler. "We did a really good job getting Quincy unbalanced early on and were able to score early and enter the half with a lead."

Play continued to be a defensive battle for both teams as GVSU would be limited to 10 shots for game. The Laker scored again at the 59-minute mark when the referee awarded the team a penalty kick after freshman forward Ava Cook was fouled on a breakaway. Gabriella Mencotti took the shot and scored to extend GVSU's lead to, 2-0.

Grand Valley State was able to shut down Quincy's offense on the afternoon, limiting the Hawks to six shots total and continued its shutout streak to 640 consecutive minutes on the season.

"This is a Quincy team that is very good and for us to come out with a win and our seventh consecutive shutout gives our team and defense great confidences moving forward," added Holser.
