#11 Lakers Set To Host Northwood In GLIAC Matchup

#11 Grand Valley State (2-1, 2-0) will host Northwood (2-1, 0-1) in a GLIAC home tilt Saturday (Sept. 23) at Lubbers Stadium. GVSU leads the all-time series with Northwood by a 26-8-1 margin. This will be the first meeting between the Lakers and Timberwolves since 2013 and it will also mark the first time Northwood has played at Lubbers Stadium since 2012. 

Grand Valley State is coming off a 42-7 GLIAC road win at Michigan Tech last Saturday. The Lakers scored two defensive touchdowns on interception returns from defensive linemen and RB Marty Carter rushed for 177 yards and at TD on 16 carries. QB Bart Williams completed 16-of-23 passes for 188 yards and two TDs, while WR Brandon Bean (6-66, 1) and TE Nick Keizer (5-63, 2) led the receiving unit. Linebackers Garrett Pougnet (10 tackles) and Collin Schlosser (9 tackles) led the way defensively, while defensive tackle Demetrius Farmer and defensive end Michael Pettis returned interceptions for TDs. 

Northwood is coming off a 42-14 home loss to Ashland, The Eagles led 42-0 at the half and cruised to the win. Northwood will have the services of quarterback Joe Garbarino back tonight after he missed the Ashland game with an ankle injury. Garbarino has rushed for 95 yards and a team-high four TDs in two games, while also completing 20-of-32 passes for 261 yards and two TDs. Running back Dominick Giovinazzo leads the rushing game with 142 yards, while wide receiver John Hall leads all receivers with nine catches for 158 yards. Defensively, defensive end Charles Williams leads the way with 13 tackles, including a team-high 3.5 QB sacks (-23) and 4.5 tackles for loss (-28). 
 
• Grand Valley State is in its 47th season of football and sports a 385-139-3 all-time record. GVSU's .734 winning percentage tops all of college football regardless of division in winning percentage. Michigan ranks second (.730) and Notre Dame third (.728).

• The Lakers are ranked 12th in this weeks AFCA Coaches' poll. GVSU entered the 2017 season ranked second in the AFCA poll. GVSU has now been ranked in the AFCA preseason top three 12 times since 2002 (16 polls) and the top 10 14 times. The Lakers have been ranked in every AFCA top 25 preseason poll the last 16 years, including a ranking as the number one team in the AFCA weekly poll an NCAA DII high 88 times since 2002. 

• Junior RB Marty Carter has rushed for 340 yards and three TDs on 49 carries this season. In addition, Carter is now fifth in all-time rushing yards with 3,137, becoming just the fifth player in the storied history of GVSU football to break the 3,000-yard mark. Laker legend Jamie Hosford (1973-76) is fourth in the all-time annals with 3,157 yards. The top three rushers of all time have come since 1999 with Reggie Spearmon (1999-2002) third at 3,467 yards, Michael Tennessee (2000-2004) second at 3,515 yards and James Berezik (2007-09) first with 3,630 yards.

• Junior QB Bart Williams has completed 55-of-85 passes for 678 yards and eight TDs this season. Williams continues to move up the list of all-time passing leaders at GVSU, becoming just the fifth QB to go over the 8,000-yard passing mark. Williams, who is 26-5 all-time as a starter, has completed 531-of-898 passes for 8,227 yards and 86 TDs. Former Laker great Brad Iciek is fourth with 8,461 yards.

• Senior WR Brandon Bean is inching closer to the 100-catch mark in his career. Bean, who leads the Lakers with 21 catches for 225 yards in 2017, now has 93 catches in his career for 1,502 yards and 14 TDs.

• Senior LB Garrett Pougnet moved past the 200-tackle mark as a Laker and now has 208 stops in his career. Pougnet leads the team with 21 tackles in 2017. 

• Senior LB Collin Schlosser appeared in his 40th game for the Lakers at Michigan Tech. Schlosser, who has 17 total tackles in 2017, now has 227 career tackles in his career with GVSU.
