Lakers Clip Eagles in Wednesday Twinbill, Sweep Season Series

GVSU scored 25 runs on 29 hits on the day

ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Grand Valley State baseball team defeated Ashland in a pair of games on Wednesday in Ashland, Ohio, completing a season sweep of the Eagle for the Lakers. GVSU took the opener by an 11-7 score, and used a 10-run inning in the nightcap to take that game by a 14-8 score. With the wins, GVSU improved to 24-14 overall, and 12-8 in GLIAC play. 

The Eagles struck first in the opener, scoring two quick runs off starter Tate Brawley (5-0). GVSU would then retaliate with nine runs across the next four innings, capped off by a three-run home run from Austin LaDoux in the fifth inning to put the Lakers up by a 9-3 score. After the Eagles added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lakers went ahead 11-4 after RBI singles from Josh Smith and Keith Browning

Ashland would get three more runs in the seventh frame, but the margin would get no closer, and the Lakers took game one by an 11-7 final. 

Brawley hurled six innings in notching his fifth win, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out five. LaDoux led the Lakers with three RBI, two hits and three runs scored, while Smith tallied three hits and drove in three runs. Connor Glick notched a pair of runs, hits and RBI for GVSU. 

In the second game, the Lakers and Ashland were tied at 2-2 in the second frame, which then became a 4-2 Eagle lead in the third inning after a J.P Sorma home run off of Laker starter Noah Lamboley (5-1). GVSU then responded with a season-high 10 runs in the fourth inning, including home runs from Alex Young and Anthony Villar as the Lakers went ahead by a 12-4 score. Solo runs in the sixth and seventh inning got the Lakers up to 14 runs, and the Eagles tacked on a three run home run in the ninth to get the score to 14-8. 

Lamboley hurled five innings to pick up his fifth win of the season, allowing five runs . Brendan Nearing pitched two innings of relief, striking out four, while Evan Koning pitched 1.1 innings and Mitch Ashcraft threw 2/3 of an inning in relief as well. Keith Browning led the Lakers with two runs and two hits, which drove in three runs. Anthony Villar notched two hits and two RBI, scoring three runs as well.
