HOUGHTON, Mich.—The last time the Grand Valley State women's soccer program traveled to Houghton, Michigan to face the Huskies, the matchup during the 2014 season ended with a 0-0 draw. On Sunday afternoon, the Lakers wasted little time drawing first blood on the Huskies, and successfully defended against any hope of an equalizer to win a tough defensive battle on the road, 1-0.
Gabriella Mencotti scored the golden goal for Grand Valley State, who won their sixth straight game with her go-ahead strike in the 12
th minute to improve to 7-0-1 (2-0-0 GLIAC) on the season. The goal was her third goal in two games, and her second game winning strike of the year.
The Lakers held a 22-7 advantage in shots in the game, and conceding only two shots on goal to the Huskies.
"We were excellent defensively", said GVSU head coach
Jeff Hosler. "We only conceded one really dangerous chance all weekend and that shot went wide. Really happy with the way our team shape has been and the commitment to transition defensively. The U.P. Trip is never easy and we came away with two shutout victories. Still plenty to work on, but we are in a good place with the miles we've traveled and only two home matches thus far."
Grand Valley State improves to 10-0-1 all-time against Michigan Tech, who drops to 5-2 on the season. The Huskies were the fourth straight opponent that the Lakers have shut out, amounting to 380:42 of game time since the last opponent goal was scored. Sophomore
Jennifer Steinaway was perfect in goal once again, making two saves in recording her fifth clean sheet of the season.
The Lakers now enter a stretch of three straight home games, including Friday's (Sept. 30) matchup with Tiffin University at GVSU's Lubbers Stadium, in which the Lakers will attempt to break the NCAA Division II single game attendance record of 3,227. After that, the Lakers will face #21 Ashland University at home on Sunday, before entertaining a mid-week contest with #14 Florida Tech on Wednesday, the last remaining regular season non-conference game this season for GVSU.
