#2 GVSU Claims 38-0 Win At Walsh In GLIAC Action

First shutout for Lakers since 2012

#2 Grand Valley State recorded a 38-0 shutout victory over Walsh Saturday afternoon in Canton, Ohio. The shutout was the first for GVSU since a 28-0 victory at Tiffin in 2012. GVSU improves to 4-0 both overall and in GLIAC action.

Grand Valley State scored on its opening possession of the game with a 6-play, 51-yard drive that took 2:05 off the clock. Sophomore running back Marty Carter scampered 14 yards on his first carry of the game and sophomore QB Bart Williams hit senior WR Matt Williams with an 8-yard TD pass for the first TD of the game. Senior PK Joel Schipper booted his first PAT of the day and GVSU led 7-0 with 11:22 left in the first quarter. 

Schipper booted a 21-yard field goal with 4:09 left in the first quarter to conclude a 12-play, 51-yard drive that took 5:40 off the clock. 

The Laker defense continued to dominate, limiting Walsh to 39 yards and two first downs. 

GVSU moved 55 yards in six plays as senior RB Terrell Dorsey finishd the drive with a 13-yard TD run at the 11:09 mark of the second quarter. 

Grand Valley State closed the first half with an 11-play, 73-yard scoring drive. B. Williams hit junior WR Urston Smith with an 8-yard scoring pass with just 29 seconds left in the first half and Schipper added the PAT for a 24-0 GVSU lead. 

The GVSU defense limited Walsh to 73 total yards and three first downs on 26 plays. In addition, the Cavaliers were held to zero rushing yards on nine attempts. 

GVSU and Walsh exchanged turnovers to start the second half. The Lakers took advantage of the Cavalier turnover, driving 90 yards in nine plays for a score. Sophomore WR Nick Dodson recorded a spectacular one-handed catch that he turned into a 50 yard touchdown to up the GVSU lead to 31-0. 

Redshirt freshman Kalen Dunham picked off a pass in the endzone and the Laker offense went back to work, driving 80 yards in eight plays for a Dorsey 2-yard TD run on the first play of the fourth quarter. B. Williams hit Dodson with a big play on the drive deep into Walsh territory.

The Lakers' starting defensive unit allowed 153 total yards, including six rushing yards on 11 carries. 

B. Williams completed 13-of-26 passes for 201 yards and two TDs, while Dodson led the receiving unit with four catches for 99 yards. Carter led the rushing attack with 98 yards on 15 carries, while Dorsey added 37 yards and two TDs on 11 carries.

GVSU picked off two passes and recovered a fumble, while also recording nine tackles for loss (-37), four QB sacks (-27). Senior LB David Talley led the defense with six tackles and a TFL (-3), while Ohio native and senior LB Joe Moran added 5.5 tackles, a TFL and returned a fumble 10 yards. .
