ORLANDO, TAMPA, Fla./CONWAY, S.C. – Grand Valley State opened the first weekend of the outdoor track & field season with numerous athletes competing along the East Coast shortly after the 2016 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championships.
 
A majority of the Lakers competed in the thee-day Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational at Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina. Angela Ritter qualified for the 100m dash final and placed sixth with a time of 12.11. Ritter placed ninth in the 200m dash seeded race with a time of 24.21, and placed sixth as a member of the 4x400m relay. Also running multiple events were Jessica O'Connell, Alexis Duncan, and Skylar Dantzler. Duncan also competed in the long jump (5.34m), while Dantzler (58.60) ran in the 400m open race and O'Connell (1:02.48) ran in the 400m seeded race.
 
Beatriz Indurain finished sixth in the 100m hurdles finals (14.42), while Eskolunbe Puente finished seventh (1:01.81) and Brenna Luba 25th (1:05.93) in the 400m hurdle seeded race. In the field events, Samantha Saikalis (1.60m) and Kathryn Mills (1.60m) in the seeded high jump.
 
Sean Wells ran in the 110m hurdle finals and placed second (14.12), and Lawson Bright-Mitchell finished second in the 100m dash final (10.72) and finished fourth in the seeded 200m dash final (21.50). In the field events, Samora Nesbitt took ninth in the triple jump (14.63m), Hunter Weeks took eighth (2.05m) and Tor'i Brooks took 10th (2.00m) in the seeded high jump, and Brooks finished in a tie for sixth (7.29m) in the seeded long jump.
 
Grand Valley State had a trio of competitors in the pole vault at the UCF Black & Gold Challenge. Jaime Roberts took third in the women's pole vault invitational with a 4.00m (13' 1.5'') while Whitney Bice placed first (3.55m/11' 7.75'') and Skylar Schoen took fourth (3.55m/11' 7.75'') in the pole vault open. The four-way tie was broken in a jump off, which Bice won for GVSU.
 
The trio of vaulters also competed at the USF Bulls Invitational, placing in the top three of all competitors. Roberts took first (4.02m/13' 2.25''), while Schoen took second (3.72m/12' 2.5'') and Bice placed third (3.72m/12' 2.5'').
 
The Lakers will head South for their next competition at the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State University, on March 25-26 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
