Grand Valley State Finishes Third, Fifth at Track & Field National Championships

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The 2016 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championships is officially in the books from the Robert W. Plaster Center at Pittsburg State, and Grand Valley State finished in the top five for both men and women.
 
The Grand Valley State women ended the day with 38 points to earn a third-place finish, coming in behind national champion Lincoln (Mo.) with 60 points and runner-up Hillsdale with 58 points while finishing ahead of Lewis and Pittsburg State (41 pts.). Four Lakers earned All-America honors on Saturday, giving them eight total All-Americans at this year's nationals.
 
The women scored their first points of the second day of competition with a fourth-place finish in the 60m hurdles. Beatriz Indurain finished the race in 8.48, scoring five points for Grand Valley State. Angela Ritter also scored two points by finishing seventh in the 60m dash with a time of 7.56, while Gina Patterson recorded a third-place finish in the Mile with a time of 4:45.03, giving GVSU six more points. The final Laker to score points was Kendra Foley, turning in a seventh-place finish in the 3000m to give GV two points by crossing the finish line at 9:35.24.
 
The Laker men finished with 38.25 points, giving them a fifth-place finish. Tiffin takes home the national championship trophy after earning 49 points, while Adams State finished in second with 47 points, and Academy of Art and Lincoln (Mo.) tied for third with 39 points, preventing GV from earning the third-place trophy by just .75 points. Grand Valley State finished with 12 All-Americans, with eight earning the honor on Friday and four on Saturday.
 
Tor'i Brooks scored two points by finishing in seventh in the Heptathlon with 5285 points. Hunter Weeks scored .25 points in a four-way tie for eighth in the high jump by hitting 2.06m (6' 9''). Sean Wells scored a fourth-place finish in the 60m hurdles, crossing the line at 7.91 to score five points. Ethan Barnes recorded a third-place finish in the 800m with a time of 1:49.09 to earn the final six points of the day for Grand Valley State.
 
With the indoor season concluded, Grand Valley State now turns their attention to the outdoor season. The Lakers open the outdoor season at the USF Bulls Invitational on March 17, the Coastal Carolina Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational from March 17-19, and the UCF Black & Gold Challenge on March 19.
