Lakers Shine at Saturday Big Meet

Saturday Results | Friday Recap

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The 2016 Big Meet is officially in the books after the conclusion of the Saturday Big Meet at the Kelly Family Sports Center. Saturday marked the final day that saw well over 3,000 athletes compete throughout two days of intense competition.

There were 19 total NCAA provisional qualifying marks hit by Laker individuals and teams today which, combined with the 36 provisional and automatic marks from Friday's events, makes this one of the best weekends of competition for Grand Valley State this season.

In running events, six individuals and two relay teams earned provisional marks. Breanna Luba earned a provisional mark after running the 60m dash in 8.82, tied for her best time of the season after her performance in the same event at the Hillsdale Wide Track Classic.

Both men's and women's Distance Medley Relay teams hit provisional qualifying times, with the men's team of Mitchell Wilkins, Zakry O'Brien, Alec Blue and Zach Panning recording a time of 10:05.07, and Rachel Walters, Jessica O'Connell, Natalie Nelson and Kendra Foley crossing the finish line at 11:42.79. The women's DMR team currently sits fifth in the country with their time from today's run.

10 Lakers hit provisional marks in the field events, with three weight throwers their finishes from yesterday. Jay Lechner hit 18.47m (60' 7.25") in the weight throw today, an improvement over yesterday's mark of 18.28m (54' 6.50''), while Kyra Hull (18.05m/59' 2.75'') and Kaylyn Hill (17.90m/58' 8.75'') also improved on their marks from Friday.

Earning their first provisional marks of the weekend were Tyler Pavliga (7.11m/23' 7.50'') and Sarah Talbott (5.73m/18' 9.75'') in the long jump, Hunter Weeks (2.05m/6' 8.75'') in the high jump, Whitney Bice (3.62m/11' 10.50") in the pole vault, and Jenae Linville (16.44m/53' 11.00'') in the weight throw.

Saturday saw one record broken, making it seven records broken throughout the two days after six were set on Friday. The record breaker was former Laker great and three-time indoor All-American Kristen Hixson, setting a new Big Meet mark in the pole vault with a mark of 4.52m (14' 10.00"), besting the previous record of 4.43m set by both her and Kaite Nageotte in 2015.

With the Big Meet now over, the sixth and final home meet of the 2015-16 season will be the GVSU Tune-Up, held at the Kelly Family Sports Center on Friday (Feb. 19) at 3 pm. Following the Tune Up, Grand Valley State will travel to Tiffin, Ohio for the GLIAC Indoor Championships, hosted by Tiffin University from February 27-28.
