ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State women's basketball team squeaked out an 81-77 victory over Ohio Dominican at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale, Mich. on Saturday night.
The Lakers trailed for much of the first quarter, but found themselves behind only 18-17 after the end of the period. GVSU was able to convert turnovers into points during the first half of the game, scoring 10 points off of the Panthers' seven turnovers.
Bailey Cairnduff led the Lakers to a 34-32 lead at the half behind a hot shooting performance through the first two periods going 5-10 overall with a 4-7 clip from the three point line.
GVSU would lead Ohio Dominican the rest of the way, stretching their lead to as high as 12 at the five-minute mark of the fourth quarter. The Panthers would storm back late on a 17-7 run in the final four minutes to bring the score to 79-77 with 3 seconds remaining. The Lakers would ice the game down the stretch, with Cairnduff knocking down a pair of clutch free throws in the final seconds of the game.
For the Lakers, all five starters scored double digits in points.
Piper Tucker put up 11 points,
Kayla Dawson contributed 16, Cairnduff finished with 19,
Taylor Lutz put up 10, and
Janae Langs contributed 16 in the Laker victory. GVSU improves to 6-1 on the year and 2-0 in the GLIAC, while Ohio Dominican is now 5-3 and 1-1 in the GLIAC.
The Lakers follow up the win with a trip to Hillsdale on Thursday at 6:00 PM when they take on the Chargers. GVSU will then take on Walsh in Canton, Ohio on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
