#19 Lakers Triumph in Puerto Rico Clasico Finale, Defeat University of Indianapolis 53-47

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico— Timely shooting and 19 point from Bailey Cairnduff propelled the Grand Valley State women's basketball team to its second win in as many days, as the Lakers defeated the University of Indianapolis by a 53-47 score on Saturday afternoon. The game was the second and final game of the Puerto Rico Clasico held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the win improves the Laker's record to 4-1 on the season.

Cairnduff led the way for GVSU with a season high 19 points and seven rebounds on 5-8 shooting from the field. She was 3-6 from beyond the arc and perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. Janae Langs (13 pts) also scored in double figures for Grand Valley State.

The Lakers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the game, and led by as many as seven in the first quarter before the Greyhounds closed the gap to two at the end of the first.

The Greyhounds seized a brief lead in the second quarter of play, holding a two-point lead for a brief span before GVSU regained control, outscoring Indianapolis 10-3 to close out the second quarter and carrying a five-point lead into the halftime break after a Langs layup with 21 seconds left.

Midway through the third quarter, the Greyhounds tied the game up at 25-25 with a three-point basket from Sarah Costello, who finished second on the Greyhounds with 15 points in the contest. UIndy then went up by three points on another trifecta from Costello,  before an layup and free throw from Langs tied the game back up at 28-28.  A layup from Cairnduff put the Lakers up by four briefly with 2:12 left in the third quarter, but Greyhounds leading scorer Sydney Brackmyre then hit a three-pointer and a layup on consecutive possessions to put the Greyhounds up by one with 1:21 left in the third quarter.

After the Lakers closed the third quarter out with a one point lead after a pair of Langs free throws, the back and forth affair continue as Brackmyre nailed a three to push UIndy up by two. After Brackmyre added the back end of a one-and-one trip to the line, Cairnduff hit a three-pointer to tie the game up at 39-39 with 5;42 left in the game. Piper Tucker added another three 30 seconds later to put GVSU up three, and a free throw and layup by Dawson then got the Lakers up by six.

Faced with trying to get the ball back, the Greyhounds put the Lakers on the line in the final 1:10 of the game, and three Laker players combined to go a perfect 8-8 at the line to seal the victory despite a few late Greyhound buckets. All told, the lead changed eight times, and was tied at seven different points in the game. Neither team held a lead larger than seven in the contest.

The Lakers will return to the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena this weekend, as they take on the University of Findlay at home on Friday, followed by a Sunday afternoon matchup with Ohio Dominican on Sunday.
